How to Label Moving Boxes

When you’re in the process of moving to a new home, labeling your belongings and boxes is an important step. Without proper labeling, it’s easy to forget what’s inside or where things go once they get there. So, finding a system that works quickly and efficiently can save you time and keep you from becoming frustrated as you move in.

Moving Boxes Marking Methods:

There are many different ways to go about labeling your boxes but here are some of the most popular methods:

* Address Method:

A simple way to label boxes is by using the address of your new home. This way, you can identify right away what room each box belongs in, whether it’s bedroom 1 or living room. Also, if you have a system where your belongings are being moved to their permanent location from the truck first, this will help keep boxes and furniture organized as they wait for installation.

  * Room Method:

When labeling moving boxes in this method, use a marker to label each box with the name of its intended room. For example, put ‘Bedroom 1’ on all of the bedroom boxes or ‘Kitchen’ on all kitchen boxes. Once everything has been moved and set up in its proper place then you can go through your boxes and put away the contents.

* Category Method:

The category method is used to label moving boxes by a similar theme or object. For instance, in one box label all of the ‘Kitchen’ items such as pots and pans, cutting boards, knives etc. In another box label miscellaneous kitchen items like dish towels, cooking utensils etc. This way you know right away where everything belongs once you get into the house and unpack each box.

  * Alphabetical Method:

If a room method doesn’t work for you and a category method seems too tricky then try the alphabetical method which labels all boxes starting with A going to Z labeling one letter per box (A-zzz). This way you know where every box goes even before it’s unpacked and can unpack one room at a time.

  * Color Code Method:

Another good method which most people use (and probably should) is color coding their moving boxes. Prior to packing begin with several colors of marker such as blue, red,, black, etc. Label each box with the appropriate color and you’ll know where to put the box in its corresponding room.

This may seem like a lot at first but when you’re going room to room it’s easy to find the box for that room and move it. Just remember if you take down the box labeled “Red” and begin filling up the empty space in your vehicle with other boxes, don’t be surprised when they come out in another room!
